Nominations may come from Mentor Groups, CCAs or Leadership Boards.

All Self-Nominees are to procure a nomination form from their Mentors/CCA T-ICs/SL T-ICs. Peers who wish to nominate their friends may obtain a form and pass it to said persons to encourage them to apply.

Mentors/CCA T-ICs/SL T-ICs who wish to nominate their students may pass them a form to be filled up and encourage them to apply.

Nominees are to submit a completed form to the General Office by Wednesday, August 27 1200H. Forms not completed or submitted in their entiety, or submitted after the entry deadline will not be considered.

Mentor Groups/CCAs/SL Boards may submit no more than 5 nominations. It will be the onus of the T-ICs/Exco of the respective communities to select 5 suitable candidates in the event that there are more than the permissible number.

All nominees are required to attend a 2D1N Selection Camp during the September Holidays.

Year 1 nominees are required to give a 2 minute speech on why they wish to be a student councillor during their respective mentoring periods. Mentors and students of Year 1 classes may opt to support the candidate by placing their initials on the supporters' column of the Nomination form, Page 2. This requirement tests the candidates' attitude, confidence and public speaking ability.

The Nomination Form may be downloaded here

SELECTION PROCEDURES

The stringent selection criteria for the 5th Student Council ensures that students with good leadership potential are recruited . The Student Council will consist approximately 80-90 student leaders and includes representatives from all Mentor Groups/CCAs/SL Boards.

A Student Councillor is expected to fulfill certain requirements. He or she is:

Exemplary in their conduct

Competent in their studies

Responsible, disciplined and of sound character

Willing to serve the school

Possessed of evident leadership qualities

The Student Councillors are recruitted annually from September to October. Year 1 Students are nominated via their Mentor Groups whilst Year 2 to 4 students are nominated via their Mentor Groups or CCAs. Successful nominees will be vetted by NUSHS Staff and required to pass a Selection Programme wherein they are interviewed and tested on their soft skills, e.g. social ability, dance, cheer and oratory.

Successful candidates are required to sign a binding contract containing expectations and regulations. Prior to their initation they will be placed on a three-month probation programme, after which their attitude, attendance, conduct and performance are reviewed by a panel. Probatees who do not meet the stipulated requirements will be first counseled and monitored before they are initiated. If no improvement is observed, said persons will be asked to step down.

The Presidential Elections differ in scheme from general Council Elections. The President and First Vice President are voted in by the school populace. Three months before the voting day, student councillors will nominate from amongst themselves, suitable candidates for the office of Presidency. These candidates will be interviewed by the T-ICs of the Student Council, after which short-listed candidates will be vetted by the NUSHS Staff. Successful candidates will begin campaigning, the activities of which include rally speeches, banners and posters/write-ups to promote their qualities and person. The candidate with the highest number of votes will be elected President and the candidate with the second highest number of votes will be elected First Vice President. The Second Vice President is voted internally.

After the President's Office has been elected, they will sit on the selection panel for the arrangement of the remaining 14 executive posts. The selection panel consists the T-ICs of the Student Council, outgoing committee members and the President's Office. The panel will evaluate candidate choice, capability, attitude, academic results and performance before deciding on a suitable executive position for the candidate.

All Office bearers will assume perfunctory roles for one year.

TIMELINE

<table class="MsoTableGrid" style="BORDER-RIGHT: medium none; These tele-matches are prepared for specific age groups such as: P1-3 and P4-6 as well as the mass game for everyone.

There were up to 300 children and parents, and they were really energetic and enthusiastic! Even though this caused much disorganization, but the volunteers and councillors managed to complete the tele-matches successfully. There was a slight drizzle in the middle of the Sports Meet causing a short delay, however as the clouds cleared and the sun shone brightly in the sky, the children were also brightened up and could not wait to carry on with the races!

As compared to last year’s Sports Meet, this year was much more organized and successful! The demonstrations and facilitating of the games were well done and also, the rest of the organizing committee from TYA commended on our volunteers’ efforts in carrying out the tele-matches.

This year, we managed to get more interested students (across many levels) to help out and be involved in this meaningful project. Through the feedback and comments from the students, we realised that many students are actually interested in these projects organized by the Student Council. The volunteers were very enthusiastic and supportive throughout the entire Sports meet! During this Camp all councillors discussed the direction of the Student Council in the new year (2008) and settled on various administrative matters, including the workplan and proposals to come. 2008 will be a busy year and we are committed to giving our very best. The planning has started, and it won't stop till we finish it. That is our promise to you. We also revamped the Synapse (Council Noticeboard, which can be found outside the Hall) and spring cleaned the Council Room in preparation for the year ahead. Councillors also had plenty of opportunity to bond with one another and work as a team. Pictures to come soon.

P.s. We also thank all the staff at the Bird Park and those who helped us in one way or another.

That's our Student Council!! The celebrations this year is marked by a Sports Meet, and like the previous years, all the houses put up a really strong fight for the House Cup.

The NDP this year was started off with a march, consisting of the Student Leaders and the Uniform Groups. This is the first year that the school decided to have a march on such an occasion. Under the guidance of the teachers-in-charge, the NCCs and the scouts, the student leader contingent was a sounding success. Thanks to those who have dutifully trained the contingent!! (On this note, we hope that those who were part of the contingent aren't too sunburnt.) The Student Council also thanks all the other leadership bodies who were present for the march, and sincerely hopes that the bonds and cooperation shared will help move our school to greater heights. The success of the school is not dependent on one person, one teacher or one council, but on this school working as one united body. Great job everyone!

The Council has also set up a small stall selling H2O and doughnuts in the concourse. The sale was a success and we thank all the students who supported us in this endeavour. We hope that we have provided you with a valuable service. Feedback to the Student Council on this matter is much appreciated and it can be done through the Resonance website or the feedback forms. It will be much appreciated. In this mini-enterprise, special thanks goes to our principal, Professor Lai; Mr. Jeremy Ang and Mr Lim Kim Yong for the support provided!

Also, for those who did not catch the results, Fleming was 4th, Nobel was 3rd, Fibonacci was 2nd and Faraday was 1st. Congratulations to all winners!

Happy National Day to everyone!! Our school has been running for the third year this year. There is a new Student Council being elected every year and this year is no different.

This year's theme is Pb (Lead), and it was chosen to symbolize lead being not only a basic element of nature, but also a basic element of NUS High School. Hence, we hope that Pb would naturally bring out the true essence of NUS High School leadership. We want to recruit capable students who exhibit the leadership potential to join the NUS High School Student Council to serve the student body!!

Who is eligible?

All Year 2 to Year 4 students are eligible to apply for Student Council 2008.
Your previous Semestral CAP must be 3.0 or higher.
You must have no past records of serious offences in or out of school.

How to apply?

Application forms will be available closer to the elections date and you just need to grab a form and fill it up. After which, just drop the completed form into a collection box in the General Office before 25th July 2007, at 6pm. Keep your fingers crossed and wait for further notification.

How do we ensure the best in our Student Council?

There will be interviews by our own student councillors and teachers-in-charge of the student council. They are tentatively held on 7th August, 11th August, 13th and 14th August. Most interviews will be conducted during the breaks and the lunches, and after school hours everyday. Timetable for interviewees will be drafted and distributed before this phase.

Prove your worth to the school!!

On 17th August, the candidates that are eligible to campaign would be announced during morning assembly. They would then be given a briefing on Wednesday. Also, a copy of the Campaigning Handbook will be given to each candidate, addressing key rules and regulations to follow with regards to campaigning during this period, as well as other administrative matters.

For the rest of the campaigning period (From 20th to 28th August), candidates who wish to make campaign speeches will need to sign their names on the Council notice-board, after which they will need to make their efforts to publicize their own campaign speeches and gather their own crowds. However, all candidates are expected to follow rules as stated in the Campaigning Handbook, otherwise they will be disqualified.

Polling and Results

The polls will be held on 29th August. Everyone is required to vote for your future leaders. We know you want to decide who are going to lead the school to greater heights. Results will be announced on a later date.

All other queries can be emailed to nhssc.elections@gmail.com.

Join our Student Council!!
Be part of the Fun!!
Feel the Love!!

Feed source: NUSHS Student Council
